Greatest Sonata/work for Violin and Piano out there, without a single doubt. Really - no joke - scary good performance, and remarkable ensemble playing… but that’s too clean… you need the Kremer/Argerich recording (the one with the Janáček Sonata) for this work, especially for the last movement (tastefully brutal enough) ;)

SOMEONE with a fine musical ear, high intelligence and musical education! PLEASE explain to me why Schoenberg believed that 1) Mozart is more difficult than Beethoven and 2) only Mozart approaches Bach in terms of (some kind of??) perfection of thought. How can we combine these statements of the great music theorist (Schoenbreg undoubtedly was one) with the simplicity of Mozart's scores that everyone is talking about everywhere? 2) - these are the words of Schoenberg himself, and 1) - I took from F. Gershkovich, a music theorist and a real student of Webern and Berg. And here is a very unique and interesting personal quote from F. G.: "the perfection of Beethoven's form was achieved by means simpler than those of Bach and Mozart, as a result of which Beethoven's work represents the pinnacle of the musical form” (he means - entirely homophonic)

I just finished reading Leah Broad's fabulous book "Quartet", which chronicles the lives of Dame Ethel Smyth, Rebecca Clarke, Dorothy Howell and Doreen Carwithen. I'm now on a mission to find more music by these women, but Clarke is my major priority: apparently her work got a lot more angular and modernist as she developed. If you're interested in her life and music, I thoroughly recommend "Quartet" - it's a great read, thoughtful, joyful, sobering and tragic by degrees. Thanks so much for posting this. Wonderful.

According to Arthur Rubinstein’s memoirs, Stravinsky was obsessed with Carl Czerny’s Etudes while writing/revising this late work. Rubinstein could not understand his fascination, but Stravinsky swore that his technique and Composition was improving from daily study of Czerny etudes (which of the 1,000 pieces he studied is never mentioned) After knowing this, Czerny’s great influence can be seen in this work in certain passages, and also a movement back towards his form of Fundamental-Classicism (like his Symphony in Three-Movements) Wikipedia claims his influence to be Carl Maria von Weber - I strongly disagree.
